Shōbara (庄原市 Shōbara-shi) is a city located in northeastern corner of Hiroshima, Japan. The city was founded on March 31, 1954.
On March 31, 2005 the towns of Hiwa, Kuchiwa, Saijō, Takano, and Tōjō, all from Hiba District (dissolved by this action), and the town of Sōryō, from Kōnu District (dissolved by this action), were merged into the expanded city of Shōbara.
The entire Shobara area is losing around 2% of its population per year, mirroring the exodus of young people to larger urban centers across Japan. In addition nearly 40% of the population is over the age of 65.
